Moxee American Kitchen & Mad Mouse Brewery ( has opened at 724 W. Maxwell St. in University Village Marketplace (, a mix of dining, retail, and service offerings in the heart of Chicago’s historic Maxwell Street.

Moxee features American regional fare made from locally sourced ingredients. Signature dishes include shrimp and grits, hickory smoked pit barbecue, and a chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. Many items – including bacon, pastrami, sausages and cider-brined turkey – are prepared at the restaurant’s smokehouse and bakery, both located nearby in the bustling area near UIC.

Mad Mouse Brewery concocts small-batch specialty ales that are offered along with a rotating selection of craft beers on 24 taps, an extensive wine list, and a full array of artisan cocktails featuring many locally made spirits.

“If we can make it ourselves, we will,” says Managing Partner Rob Strom, whose Skinny House LLC team also owns Prairie Moon in Evanston and Wheatberry Tavern in Buchanan, Mich.

“’Small-batch’ underlies everything we do here—from the brew house to the kitchen. We’ve gathered recipes from 26 years of cooking and travelling, and we strive to provide the community with a place that individuals and families alike can call their local spot,” he says.

The combined space consists of two dining rooms totaling 120 seats, plus a 15-seat bar. Works from Chicago artists decorate the wall, while the bar and tables are made from wood salvaged from a razed barn. Mad Mouse Brewery’s “engine of innovation” (aka the brew house) is located at the west end of the dining area in full view of customers.

Weather permitting, Moxee offers al fresco dining on an outdoor patio that also can be reserved for private parties of up to 40.

Moxee American Kitchen & Mad Mouse Brewery opens at 11:30 a.m. daily and closes at 1 a.m. Monday through Wednesday; 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 10 p.m. Sunday.
