Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) June 08, 2014 -- June 2014 is National Iced Tea Month, the perfect time to celebrate one of everyone's favorite ways to beat the summer heat. Granted, those who love iced tea don't need much of an excuse to drink it, but it's always nice to see favorite foods, drinks, and pastimes acknowledged.
The Beginnings of Iced Tea's Popularity in the United States
Legend has it that iced tea was popularized by a drink vendor on June 10, 1904 during the World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. As is usually the case in Missouri in the summer, it was too hot that day for anybody to really want a cup of hot tea. In fact, it couldn't even be given away. This didn't stop the tea vendor, who decided to run hot, freshly brewed tea through iced pipes to chill it. Before long, tea lovers who thought it was too hot to enjoy their favorite drink heard about the vendor's new cold tea and found that it was the perfect fit for a hot day. A traditional tea vendor became an iced tea specialist that day, which is now celebrated every 10th of June.
The idea that this was the origin of iced tea is a legend. It may certainly have happened, but iced tea itself is much older than the 1904 World's Fair. Recipes for iced tea date back at least to the 1870s and some say that people were drinking it in the United States as bar back as the 1860s!
Iced Tea Today
Today, iced tea is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. The "proper" way to make the drink is to brew the tea hot, put it on ice, and serve it chilled, however, iced tea is now commercially sold in cans and bottles everywhere. Iced tea makes up roughly 85 percent of all tea consumed in the United States and it is a popular alternative for those who don't like carbonated soft drinks, especially in the Southern states where sweetened iced tea is practically a staple.
There are many great reasons to celebrate National Iced Tea Month, but the important question is how will you celebrate the occasion. Iced tea can be made by brewing it hot, letting it cool, and putting it on ice, however, there is delicious iced tea that can be purchased commercially. China Mist Tea Company has a wonderful variety of flavors that can help celebrate National Iced Tea Month, and National Iced Tea Day on June 10, in style.
Come Celebrate!
Of course, June is not the only time to drink iced tea. Delicious iced tea can be enjoyed any time and and becoming an iced tea specialist is within grasp. With a knowledge of some of the history and facts behind iced tea, there are more great reasons to drink iced tea today. Enjoy it all month and every month.
