Jacques starts off this easy beginner blues guitar lesson by demonstrating a variety of right hand techniques for your picking hand such as; hybrid picking, chicken pickin, and snapping and popping. “A lot of you are used to playing with a guitar pick, which is fine”, says Darville, “but you should also incorporate the fingers of the right hand a little bit because if you can utilize the middle and third finger for pulling up on the strings you can get a new kind of attack in your solos’. Next Jacques demonstrates a cool riff that you use to practice this idea. The riff is in the key of A and Jacques demonstrates it as follows; 7th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger and bend up one half step and follow it with the 5th fret of the 2nd string with first finger to the 5th fret of the first string with first finger, all played with the guitar pick. Then he plays the 8th fret of the 2nd string with 3rd finger by pulling up on the string with the 2nd finger on his right hand to achieve a pop and then does a slide up to the 10th fret. Jacques continues by performing a variety of different picking variations of this same lick. Darville says that this is a technique that Stevie Ray Vaughn used a lot.
