W.S. Tyler (http://wstyler.com), a leader in particle analysis, recently engaged in three major sales transaction. In all three instances, the company signed on to provide its CPA particle size and shape analyzers to aid in frac sand processing. More specifically, W.S. Tyler’s particle analysis technology will now be helping providers of proppant sand to the oil and gas well industries perform a final quality check on their material.

According to Geology.com, frac sand is “a crush-resistant sand for oil and gas wells.” More specifically, frac sand is used as a proppant during the pumping process. “When the pumps are turned off, the fractures deflate but do not close completely – because they are propped open by billions of grains of frac sand.” The site goes on to explain, “The new fractures in the rock, propped open by the durable sand grains, form a network of pore space that allows petroleum fluids to flow out of the rock and into the well.”

How do W.S. Tyler’s CPA particle size and shape analyzers tie into all this fracking technology? The propping open of the fractures “only occurs if enough sand grains to resist the force of the closing fractures have been delivered into the rock.” That’s where W.S. Tyler enters the equation.

“Our CPAs are used as a final quality control check,” explains a company spokesperson. “They ensure that the material on the train cars meets the correct frac sand spec before it is loaded into the silos for distribution.” As a result, “the end users are assured that they are purchasing the correct standard of material for their extraction process. The speed of our CPAs makes for an easy and worry free unloading.”

Due to confidentiality agreements, W.S. Tyler has chosen to maintain the anonymity of its new clients. Generally speaking, however, one is a U.S. producer of lightweight ceramic proppant. Another is a leading producer of monocrystalline sand, a specialized mineral used as a proppant (frac sand).
