Champion Cyclist George Hincapie Named Director of Cycling at The Cliffs
Greenville, SC (PRWEB) June 11, 2014 -- The Cliffs, a collection of seven luxury communities spanning from Greenville, SC to Asheville, NC, has partnered with champion cyclist George Hincapie to expand its health and fitness programming to offer members exclusive access to one of the most recognized riders in the world. As “Director of Cycling,” Hincapie – a local resident of Greenville – will lead Cliffs members on private rides throughout the year, and participate in Cliffs special events.
A native of Queens, N.Y., Hincapie chose Greenville, SC as his home due to the robust cycling culture. Bicycling Magazine named it one of the "Best Small Cities for Cycling" in 2012, and the Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club is more than 700 members strong. Cycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a popular activity that provides 469 miles of picturesque vistas, and is easily accessible from several of The Cliffs’ communities.
“We are excited to announce George Hincapie as our Director of Cycling at The Cliffs. As one of the most celebrated names in the sport, we could not ask for a more qualified partner,” said David Sawyer, Executive Vice President of The Cliffs Clubs. “Our members are eager to ride the scenic roads of our southern Blue Ridge Mountains with a World Champion and we look forward to growing Hincapie’s role with The Cliffs in the years to come,” said Dr. Matt Ort, Cliffs Director of Health, Performance and Recreation.
During his 19-year professional career, Hincapie was regarded as the premier American classics rider of his generation. He competed in a record 17 Ronde van Vlaanderen races and finished second at the grueling Paris-Roubaix, the best ever for any American. Beyond the classics he rode in the Tour de France 17 times and won three US National Road Race championships.
Through the partnership, Cliffs members will be able to rent bicycles and participate in special programs at Hotel Domestique, Hincapie’s newly-opened boutique hotel 20 minutes outside of Greenville, and just five minutes from The Cliffs at Mountain Park and Cliffs Valley communities. The luxury 13-room property is surrounded by trails for mountain biking and bicycling suitable for the novice to the expert rider, and also offers an on-staff mechanic to adjust bikes to the proper fit and assist riders with all their cycling needs.
“The Cliffs is a natural partner for us,” says George Hincapie. “Greenville and Asheville are becoming increasingly known as destinations for health conscious, athletic people, and this is reflected in The Cliffs’ membership, as well as its programming. We hope to be an extension of the wellness experience, while introducing members to the incredible cycling right in their backyard.”
In addition to world-class cycling, The Cliffs provides access to a tremendous variety of amenities, including seven golf courses, clubhouses, state-of-the-art wellness centers, boating marinas, a beach club, water sports, tennis courts, equestrian center, hiking trails, restaurants, wine clubs, wedding venues, meeting facilities, tournaments, community gardens, and an organic farm and has earned recognition as one of “America’s Top 10 Golf Communities” by Golf Magazine and “Top 10 Private Golf Communities” by Robb Report.
