Scarsdale, NY (PRWEB) June 16, 2014 -- This summer, 13 high school scholars selected from nearly 50 applicants from 30 New York area schools will experience America - it's visual grandeur, it's cultures, and the nuanced hues of its sweeping humanity - in the annual Trip of a Lifetime adventure trek.
The 13 finalists were chosen from 50 submissions to the nonprofit group, Trip of a Lifetime, which since 2008 has raised more than $350,000 and, with this year's class, has sent 44 underprivileged high school students on adventures of discovery throughout the awe-inspiring American West.
In her application, selected student Alexandra Torres, who attends Sleepy Hollow High School, wrote, "Traveling on my own is something I have never done before, so the idea of it is somewhat thrilling and new to me. Becoming more independent is something that I would like to gain from this experience. When I go off to college it would be a great characteristic to obtain."
The mother of another chosen applicant, Janice Liu, expressed her aspirations for her child's Trip of a Lifetime in these words: "She will learn about other cultures, and expand her horizons. She will also gain an appreciation of her own social responsibility, so that she can make a difference in the world." Jaiyuan Liu attends The Bronx High School of Science.
The other remarkable selected students in the 2014 Trip of a Lifetime class are:
Briana Taylor; Nouman Ijaz; Bria Taylor; Kalifala Konneh; Pilar Herera; Zairia Karey; Peaches Wallace; Jotham Kim; Wilmaris DeLaCruz; Selina Asamoah; and Chelsy Goris.
"These applications had attributes that moved us deeply, and while we were able to chose the winners, it was extraordinarily difficult, as it is every year," said Stan Rosenberg, Founder and Executive Director of Trip of a Lifetime. "Every single submission we receive is an enormous accomplishment. Our organization has seen passion for the travel experience become a catalyst for community change. It has inspired great achievements from our alumni. There are so many deserving kids who want and need this. We hope more donors will appear and pitch in. And to the Class of 2014, we truly wish you the trip of a lifetime!"
