BCC Research Convenes 25th Annual Flame Conference; Industry Experts Gather to Discuss Latest Advances in Flame Retardancy
Wellesley, Mass., (PRWEB) June 11, 2014 -- Industry leaders from around the world recently convened in Stamford, Connecticut, for BCC Research's (http://www.bccresearch.com/) annual conference, RECENT ADVANCES IN FLAME RETARDANCY OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS. The "Flame Conference" provides a forum for global experts from both industry and academia to discuss the latest technological advancements in flame-retardant materials. This year marked the conference's 25th anniversary of the conference.
Geared specifically toward scientists and other technical specialists, this much-anticipated event featured more than 40 specialized sessions presented by experts from both government/academia and the commercial/industrial sectors. The conference was chaired by Dr. Charles Wilkie, a professor of polymer and organic chemistry at Marquette University.
“The Flame Conference is highly regarded by industry practitioners worldwide,” says Dr. Wilkie. “Each year it draws scientists and technologists to a unique forum focused on innovation. Our speakers are prominent experts who review exciting technological achievements in the industry. We also discuss regulatory issues and developments in testing technologies. There's really nothing quite like it.”
Professionals from around the world gathered to attend informative sessions presented by industry experts from both government/academia and the commercial/industrial sectors. Many attendees have participated in the conference multiple years because it provides them with an excellent learning experience and opportunities to network with their peers.
“Flame 2014 was the most technically strong topical conference I attended this year. The networking was great and everything was very well organized. If you want to know about the latest breakthroughs in flame retardant research, Flame is the conference to attend,” said conference attendee Jaime C. Grunlan, a professor at Texas A&M University.
Following is just a sample of sessions presented at the 2014 conference, which was held from May 19 to 21, 2014.
Fabrication of Graphene/Inorganic Compound Hybrids for Reducing Fire Hazards of Polymers - Yuan Hu, Professor, University of Science and Technology of China
In this session, Prof. Hu presented a promising approach to prepare graphene/inorganic compound hybrids to improve the flame retardancy of polymers by combining their individual advantages – work that could open the door to a future potent graphene-based nanomaterial in the domain of risk.
Graphene Polypropylene Nanocomposites: Optimizing Mechanical, Thermal, and Flame Retardant Properties
Miriam Rafailovich, Professor, SUNY-Stony Brook
Prof. Rafailovich demonstrated the results for rapheme/propylene nanocomposites measured for thermal conductivity, impact toughness, and cone calorimetric behavior as a function of the type of rapheme and its concentration.
Water-Based, Flame Retardant Nanocoatings for Foam, Textiles and Other Polymeric Substrates: New Environmentally-Benign Opportunities
Jaime C. Grunlan, Professor, Texas A&M University
In this presentation, Prof. Grunlan highlighted new flame retardant (FR) nanocoating systems, prepared from aqueous polyelectrolyte solutions, developed within the Polymer NanoComposites (PNC) Laboratory.
A Conference Proceedings document – consisting of more than 900 pages of papers or presentation slides for most of the conference sessions – can be purchased at http://www.bccresearch.com/conference/flame.
