Trillium Receives U.S. Patent for Market Manipulation Detection Engine
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 11, 2014 -- Trillium today announced that the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) issued a patent protecting the company’s innovative method for detecting market manipulation – the engine behind its Surveyor software. Surveyor is the first and only off-the-shelf solution that processes and analyzes order message data from exchanges and compares it to local order flow to quickly and accurately detect potentially manipulative events.
“Everyday, Surveyor is finding manipulation events that other platforms are missing,” said Michael Friedman, Chief Compliance Officer at Trillium and one of the designers of Surveyor. “The reason for Surveyor’s success is the unique processing method that our team invented, and that the government has now acknowledged is ours alone. We are happy that the USPTO recognized the singularity of our process.”
Competing compliance tools only analyze a small dataset of executed trades instead of the larger dataset of order messages. The SEC published a study that showed between 30 and 100 orders are placed market-wide for every execution. Only looking at executions and not orders ignores upward of 96 percent of actual trader activity.
Surveyor is the first and only tool that quickly and accurately detects manipulation by comparing billions of order messages from stock exchanges and futures markets with local order flow. Surveyor uses the comparison to detect “concentration events” – periods of time when a single trader is responsible for a significant percentage of the overall order book for a particular security. Trillium has found that market manipulation is most likely to occur during concentration events because a trader has disproportionate influence over the market-wide price of a security. If a potentially manipulative event is identified, Surveyor allows users to see on one screen exactly what traders saw before, during and after trades with nanosecond order-by-order resolution to determine whether manipulation took place.
