Nature-Inspired Recipes Flavor New Book by Marilyn Robinowitz
Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 12, 2014 -- With the right attitude, healthy eating and exercise can be fulfilling and fun. That philosophy is at the heart of a new book written by a naturalist and active grandmother, who promotes healthy food and living harmoniously with nature, which she calls “eco-fitness.” Author Marilyn Robinowitz is devoted to this belief, writing “Evidence has shown that direct contact with nature is vital to the emotional and physical health of our youth.”
“Butterflies and Bananas: Blending Nature and Nutrition for Great Food and Family Fun” includes 18 clever shake recipes named after animals, insects and birds, including five dessert versions. The shakes offer nutritious ingredients as well as essential fiber, and fun facts and the ecological roles animals play follow each delicious recipe. For instance, hummingbirds are very important pollinators of wildflowers in the United States, and chickadees often hang upside down while feeding on their prey.
Robinowitz also includes a chapter that encourages families to explore nature, such as inexpensive birthday party ideas like a nature walk scavenger hunt. The book finishes with recipes ideal for families that are easy and economical to make, healthy and delicious, featuring ingredients that are easily found. One’s a Meal Muffins and Outrageous Beef and Mango Stir-fry provide delicious options, and vegans can dine on Tri-colored Chayote Squash or Black Bean and Mango Salad. Detailed black and white illustrations by Raul Gonzalez provide unforgettable visual elements.
Marilyn Robinowitz, a volunteer naturalist at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, has interpreted environmental education to elementary school students for 14 years. The 81-year-old physically fit grandmother started making shakes with her grandson Jared and soon earned rave reviews from other children, family and friends. She now shares her passion for nature with granddaughters Camila and Lilliana, 3 and 5 years old. Illustrator Raul Gonzalez is working on a master’s degree in fine arts at the University of Texas, San Antonio, which has 20 pieces of his artwork in its permanent collection.
