Sometimes It's Hard to be A Woman is a feminist social statement layered with beauty, metaphor, and fashion. It's elegant and heavily hand embroidered, but disquieting. Heather Marie Scholl's work is motivated by a desire to tell her story and to tell the difficult truths of inequalities.
The recent #yesallwomen movement has proven that people are ready to talk about sexism and gender inequality. Sometimes It's Hard to be A Woman brings the idea of #yesallwomen into fashion and art in a new way.
Scholl's epic vision of this art work has been supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council. But their financial support was not enough to complete the work. The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is a way to cover this gap. It also includes a launch of 4 carefully chosen branded items that maintain this care for craft while still being accessible for purchase.
Only a year after receiving her MFA in fashion and knitwear design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco Scholl is coming out strong with a unique fashion lifestyle brand that aims to bring together experimental couture level art installations and a commercial wearable line of hand crafted branded items.
Find out more about the work and who she is by visiting Heather Marie Scholl or the project page Sometimes It's Hard to be a Woman. This project needs your help, pledges and pre-orders can be made on Kickstarter until July 9th, 2014.
This project is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).
