A recent study conducted by Medicus Research shows in an interim analysis that subjects on the Dukan Diet lost on average 9.12 pounds in the first two phases of the diet plan, the Attack and Cruise phase, and as much as 21 pounds total over the eight week period. In addition to weight loss, there were no reported adverse events and subjects were found to have lost the weight according to what is recommended by dietitians as healthy, consistent weight loss.
The study, led by Dr. Jay Udani, CEO of Medicus Research and Medical Director of Northridge Hospital Integrative Medicine Program, was designed to assess the effectiveness of the Dukan Diet in supporting and maintaining healthy weight loss. The diet is a high protein, low fat, low carb four-phase weight loss plan created by French doctor Pierre Dukan that discourages calorie counting and encourages people to eat real foods including lean proteins, vitamin and mineral-rich vegetables and oat bran.
“The results from the interim analysis of this study examining the Dukan Diet are statistically significant,” explains Dr. Udani. “Compared to other popular diet plans, the average weight lost by subjects is substantial. Our data shows that the Dukan Diet is a safe and effective weight loss plan and in particular, that the support the subjects received from the online coaching played an important role in their success.”
The first phase of the diet, the Attack phase, lasts one to seven days depending on how much weight a dieter has to lose to reach their True Weight, which can be calculated on the Dukan Diet website. During the Attack phase, dieters eat unlimited pure protein while drinking plenty of water and eating oat bran. During the Cruise phase, the second phase of the diet, vegetables are re-introduced into the diet and dieters steadily lose weight and remain in this phase until they reach their True Weight.
Participants of this study were healthy volunteers who had 25 pounds or more to lose to achieve their ‘True Weight’ and must have never tried the Dukan Diet previously. The study was an open label, remote study meaning that participants knew which diet they were trying and that Medicus Research was able to find participants nationwide. People who were qualified for the study were provided with the SystemedicusTM eComplianceTM eFood and eScale Smartphone applications to record their compliance and activity, enrolled in Dukan Diet’s online coaching and provided with the book: “The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever”.
Results from Medicus Research examining all four phases of the Dukan Diet over a 24-week period will be available later this year.
