Northern Westchester Hospital Surgical Team Completes Robot-Assisted Single-Incision Hysterectomy
Westchester County, NY (PRWEB) June 17, 2014 -- Northern Westchester Hospital announced today that Dr. Navid Mootabar led a surgical team that completed a robot-assisted single incision laparoscopic hysterectomy. Known as Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), Dr. Mootabar is among a small number of physicians trained in performing the daVinci robot-assisted hysterectomy procedure that enables him to remove a women’s uterus through a single one-inch incision.
To accomplish this, Dr. Mootabar used a high-definition, 3D imaging system that provided a magnified view and greater visualization of the surgical area. Using a sophisticated da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, the patient’s uterus was successfully removed through one tiny incision in the belly button, making the procedure virtually scarless.
“The technology used during a daVinci-assisted hysterectomy enables surgeons to perform highly delicate procedures by improving instrument control and eliminating the slight instrument tremor that is typically common during the procedure. When completed using the system’s sophisticated optics, the combination of improved control and enhanced visualization helps to deliver high-quality outcomes with little or no scarring,” stated Navid Mootabar, MD, Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology and a Director of the Institute for Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital.
Dr. Mootabar is one of a small group of surgeons in the United States who has received specialized training and certification to perform this surgery. This technique eliminates 3 of the 4 incisions required in a traditional laparoscopic procedure, resulting in less scarring and improved cosmetic outcomes. Other potential benefits of a single-incision hysterectomy may include less pain, less blood loss, and a faster recovery.
Other single-incision gynecologic surgeries being performed using the daVinci Surgical System include Oophorectomies (removal of the ovaries), as well as Cystectomies (removal of cysts from the ovaries). Dr. Mootabar’s advanced training enables him to regularly perform these procedures at Northern Westchester Hospital.
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the United States each year. 44% of hysterectomies performed in women aged 40 to 49 are performed laparoscopically. When surgery is indicated, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery is preferred because it is associated with smaller incisions and generally results in fewer complications, less postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stays.
Surgeons at Northern Westchester Hospital perform robot-assisted gynecological procedures such as hysterectomy; urologic procedures, such as prostatectomies; and general surgery procedures, such as colorectal surgery. NWH has been recognized by US News & World Report "Best Hospitals" in five specialties, including Urology and Gynecology.
