One of the favorites to walk away as the World Cup champion is the host nation, Brazil. Brazil is currently ranked by Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, as the third ranked team in the world. They have won the most World Cup titles in the history of the tournament with five. They last won the title in 2002 and will be led into this event by their 22-year-old superstar, Neymar. Brazil will compete in Group A during the opening stage of the tournament where they will take on Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon.
Another team considered a favorite to win it all is the top ranked team in the world and the reigning World Cup champions, Spain. Spain will be competing in Group B for their first three matches against Netherlands, Chile and Australia. When they won the cup four years ago, it was the first time in their history that they were able to capture the title and will look to become the first repeat champions since Brazil won in 1958 and 1962. They will be led into the 2014 World Cup by captain goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres.
Every four years, there are four teams that are unlucky enough to compete in the "Group of Death." This group usually contains at least three of the best teams in the tournament and this year, will feature Germany, Portugal, Ghana and the United States. Germany is the second ranked team in the world according to FIFA, while Portugal is fourth, United States is 13th and Ghana is 37th. In the last two World Cups, Ghana has given the United States their final loss and will look to start them off with a loss in their opening game.
The World Cup is a majestic event that brings together fans of all ages, sexes, religions and beliefs and is one of the most popular live events in the world.
