The Northrop Memorial Auditorium at the University of Minnesota recently underwent a dramatic $88.2 million renovation. First built in 1929, lack of funding fell through forcing the university to stray from the original plans resulting in poor acoustics. This contributed to lack of use of the building that was erected in honor of the university’s second president Cyrus Northrop.
In order to save the building from closure a massive renovation took place that spanned three years. This challenging project called for creating an aesthetically and acoustically superior performance space while preserving the three-story lobby, proscenium arch and other historic elements of the theater. In order to accomplish this daunting task the architect reached out to Arup, a global acoustic consultant firm.
The layout of the main performance space was completely changed and acoustically friendly building materials were installed. Sound Seal’s B-10 LAG/QFA-3 material was used to wrap the ducts to reduce noise emitted from the heating ventilation and air conditioning system.
The iconic Northrup Auditorium now has equally beautiful acoustics to match the spectacular renovation and what had once been a performer’s nightmare has been transformed into a space that carries even the most delicate of sounds throughout.
