Under the regulations set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) all Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals must aim to identify any underlying mental, physical, or emotional issues that can negatively affect a driver’s safety and performance. Commercial drivers must undergo a DOT physical every 24 months or less if the driver’s condition, such as high blood pressure, requires frequent monitoring. As of May 21, 2014 all medical examiners whishing to conduct a DOT physical exam must have completed all of the necessary qualifications to receive an FMCSA certification and be listed on the National Registry. Healthpointe’s occupational medicine examiners are FMCSA certified and capable of determining if a driver is physically and mentally qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. A variety of tests are conducted including: a medical and occupational history questionnaire form, a blood pressure check, vital sign testing, dipstick urinalysis, and a vision test. Following a successful test, the individual is allotted a Department of Transportation card for the proceeding 24 months. All exams are then reported to the FMCSA to be kept on record.
