McCline for Congress Pledges Public School Protection & Preservation Act: “Putting Public School Education First is a Civil Rights Issue”
Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 18, 2014 -- The Jameel McCline for Congress campaign announced today that if elected, McCline would sponsor new legislation designed to fight back against increasing privatization and destabilization of America’s public school system.
Because Public Education isn’t expressly mentioned as a federal power in the U.S. Constitution, its funding and administration is historically considered a “power reserved to the states.” But McCline believes putting public schools first is a Civil Rights issue:
“Civil Rights are the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. Shouldn’t that protect our public school system from systematic defunding through privatization?”
A child of poverty and product of New York public schools, McCline wants American ingenuity and knowhow used to improve and strengthen public schools – not to promote vouchers and charters luring students, parents and funding to private and for-profit schools.
“We can’t continue down this road to a publicly funded, privately run “shadow” school system that fosters educational and economic inequality. We have to fight back against privatization and the special interests pushing it.”
To accomplish that, McCline is proposing new legislation advancing goals such as:
-Limiting the percentage of public after-tax dollars that can be diverted by any state to for-profit charter schools under private management.
-Requiring charter schools to meet the same academic, testing, performance, budgetary and management transparency standards as public schools.
-Reducing & limiting dollar-for-dollar corporate tax breaks that fund voucher systems that take parents, students and funding out of public schools.
-Requiring religious and other private schools in voucher systems to match public academic, testing, performance, budgetary and transparency standards.
