After gaining prominence as a member of Lenny Kravitz’s band, Karl Denson has gone on to lead a storied career as a multi-faceted recording and performing artist. Denson now brings his jazz, funk and R&B tinged band Tiny Universe back to Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22.
Fans know this: Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe isn’t the jazz and R&B of their parents’ generation. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe (KDTU) creates a wildly brilliant blend of fusion, soul, rock, R&B, psychedelia and funk that breaks boundaries far and wide. Featuring guitarist DJ Williams, bassist Chris Stillwell, keyboardist David Veith, trumpet player Chris Littlefield, drummer Gabe Wallace and Denson himself on tenor and alto sax, flute and vocals, Tiny Universe dishes out the grooves that make you move.
“My style is based in dance,” says Denson. “I love the idea of creating something that naturally makes people want to move.”
With over 250,000 records sold to date, Denson’s emphasis on funk, R&B and hip hop elements have turned out to be a winning combination. Having performed at countless prestigious music festivals, including Bonnaroo, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, All Good, Wakarusa, Gathering of the Vibes, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, North Sea Jazz festival in Holland, Moscow Jazz Festival in Russia, East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Australia and the Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland, there’s no question of why KDTU’s sound attracts audiences like a moth to the flame.
