California Healthcare Institute Congratulates Newly-Elected House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy
La Jolla, Calif. (PRWEB) June 19, 2014 -- California Healthcare Institute (CHI) applauds Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) on his election today, by his peers in the House Republican conference, as House Majority Leader— the second highest leadership position in the United States House of Representatives.
“CHI congratulates Representative Kevin McCarthy on his election to House Majority Leader,” said CHI President and CEO Todd E. Gillenwater. “For more than a decade, McCarthy has proven himself a thoughtful advocate for policies impacting California's life sciences sector and the nearly 270,000 workers it employs across our state.”
Throughout his political career, McCarthy has championed policies to strengthen and promote biomedical investment, innovation and job creation in California and nationwide. In recognition of his leadership during his service in the California State Assembly, CHI presented McCarthy with its “Visionary Award” in 2005.
Since his election to Congress in 2006, CHI has continued to work with McCarthy to promote California’s life sciences innovation engine. For example, McCarthy has emphasized the importance of consistent, predictable and efficient FDA regulatory processes, bolstering biomedical R&D and driving economic growth. He has also stood with CHI in strong opposition to government drug price controls, and has been steadfast in his support for repealing the medical device excise tax. Acknowledging this work, CHI honored McCarthy again in 2011 with CHI’s congressional “Leadership Award.” He is the only legislator to have ever received a CHI award at both the state and federal level.
During his two terms in the California State Assembly and throughout his service in Congress, Representative McCarthy has been a consensus-oriented legislator, demonstrating consistent willingness to reach across the aisle to forge bipartisan solutions. McCarthy has represented the 22nd congressional district of California in the House of Representatives since 2007. Prior to his election as House Majority Leader, McCarthy served as House Majority Whip, the third most senior position in the House leadership, since January 2011. In 2003, during his freshman term in the State Assembly, McCarthy was elected, by his peers, to serve as Republican floor leader, a post he held until his election to congress.
“CHI congratulates Representative McCarthy on his election as House Majority Leader and we look forward to working closely with him to further advance thoughtful policies and legislation to bolster our state and nation’s biomedical innovation ecosystem: the jobs it supports and the patients it serves,” said Gillenwater.
McCarthy will formally assume the role of Majority Leader after current Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) steps down from the position on July 31.
