Long Term Disability Lawyer Comments on Research that Claims Sitting is “The New Smoking”
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) June 24, 2014 -- Leading a sedentary lifestyle and/or working at a sedentary job is no longer just a concern for your waistline, it is a concern for your overall wellbeing.
In an article published on CNN.com on June 17, 2014, with sources from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, it was stated that sitting for extended periods of time on a daily basis can cause increased risks for certain types of cancers.
Long term disability claims can involve claims for injuries and illnesses, including various types of cancers. If a person has access to long-term disability benefits through a group plan (through his/her employer), or has purchased individual long-term disability benefits, he/she can make a claim for benefits as a result of being unable to work as a result of cancer and cancer treatment.
“It is important to consult an experienced lawyer to review long-term disability policies and understand legal rights and obligations”, says Aaron Waxman, of Aaron Waxman and Associates, a Toronto firm who practices long-term disability law. Waxman also handles claims for critical illness claims denials.
Those who spend prolonged periods of time sitting in front of the television or sitting at work can face a higher risk of developing lung cancer (6%), colon cancer (8%) and endometrial cancer (10%,), according to information provided by CNN.com. The study did not find increased risks for other types of cancer such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, breast, rectum, ovary or prostate cancer.
How much sitting is too much sitting? According to the article – 2 extra hours of sitting per day adds the additional risk.
Researchers analyzed over 40 studies and therefore more than 4 million study participants to determine the precise relationship between specific cancers and time spent sitting.
In some of the studies, it was determined that increased sedentary lifestyle meant higher risk of major chronic diseases including diabetes and heart disease. There was also mention that even physically active people are not safe from increased risk of cancer if they sit for too many hours daily.
What is important to remember is that the study referenced is discussing an increased risk for certain cancers and has not proved a direct causal relationship between being sedentary and cancer. There are several other factors that would predispose or increase an individual’s risk of developing cancer including family history, diet, weight, alcohol intake, smoking or environmental factors.
A take-away from this research is that if you aren’t already exercising, it is a good time to start. Take breaks from your desk, stretch, take a walk on lunch and do something out of your chair and off the couch. And if you or someone you know has applied for long-term disability benefits and your application was denied at the outset, or your benefits have been terminated, consult an experienced long-term disability lawyer as soon as possible.
