Since 1893 when the university was chartered by Congress as a national university dedicated to public service, American University has educated countless students to serve the public. This dedication to the public good and commitment to exceptional education has influenced the political landscape as well as the for-profit and nonprofit sectors nationwide and worldwide.
New to American University’s renowned School of Public Affairs is the online Master of Public Administration and Policy. Based on its nationally-ranked, on-campus curricula, the 24-month program delivers foundational skills in public administration and policy that will enable American University students to serve the public in positions that require analytics, creativity, problem-solving capabilities, communication, and leadership.
Leading the program is the School’s Director of Online Programs and international scholar in public policy, Sonja Walti. Walti states, “The Master of Public Administration and Policy program is an exciting addition to our existing degrees. We recognized the interdependency and complimentary relationship between public administration and policy, so making such a degree available to students made complete sense. Not only for the future of public service, but for our students’ professional futures as well.”
The online program was developed to fit the schedules of working professionals who are actively seeking the advanced knowledge and skills needed to flourish in today’s competitive world. “For many students, online learning is their best option,” says Walti. “Our Master of Public Administration and Policy is designed specifically to take advantage of the unique strengths of our traditional MPA and MPP programs and offer those foundations to students who cannot enroll in-residence. The fact that our institution is located in Washington D.C., and that all faculty are policy players in Washington is an incredible incentive. In essence, American’s online program connects its students directly to Washington, the birthplace of policy for our nation.”
Taught by distinguished faculty of American University, students will receive exceptional instruction and guidance by professors and scholars who are experienced, reputed, and dedicated. In addition, the faculty’s practical knowledge and immersion in the Washington, D.C. political culture gives them first-hand experience crucial to providing a well-rounded learning experience.
Sonja Walti states, “This is an exciting time for careers centered, in one way or another, around public service. We are certain that American University’s Master of Public Administration and Policy will fulfill the needs of today’s employers and tomorrow’s leaders: both of whom want the same thing—the ability to prosper from greater administrative knowledge and analytical expertise.”
“We are certain that the Master of Public Administration and Policy program will help professionals do great things in a great many ways,” says Walti. “We welcome them into American’s robust network of policy professionals and are eager to see the impact they will make in their career and community.”
