Mr. Higgins joins the firm with a strong corporate counsel and litigation background. He began his legal career as a criminal defense attorney where he honed his litigation skills. Because of this experience, Russell works diligently with boards of directors to advise them on techniques that reduce the need for costly litigation and, if necessary, steers them towards mediation and arbitration as an alternative.
Mr. Higgins began representing HOA's five years ago through the coaxing of a close friend. Since then he has been advising clients on enforcement of governing documents, architectural guidelines, contract negotiations, ADA issues, insurance coverage issues and a myriad of other legal matters affecting both residential and commercial associations.
Russell earned his BA in Literature from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California. In addition to winning multiple awards and commendations, Russell served as senior staff member of the Pepperdine Law Review.
Russell is passionate about board-member and manager education. He believes that it creates effective governance and harmonious communities. He is a member of Community Associations Institute (CAI) where he has taught the Board Member Fundamentals course for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter and taught the Board Member Essentials course for the Greater Inland Empire Chapter. In addition, he regularly participates in the California Association of Community Managers (CACM).
