On June 20, 2014, Dr. James Plummer PT, DPT, OCS received his board certification as a specialist in sports therapy. This certification serves as recognition to the highest level of care available. This was the result of a multi-year long course of study and practice in the field of sports therapy. Areas covered included acute injury management, medical/surgical conditions, injury prevention and sports performance enhancement.
The motivation for this line of study came directly from Table Mountain Physical Therapy’s hours of service to high school athletic programs and youth sports leagues. As part of their mission to provide the highest level of care available, obtaining board certification was a natural progression in the services offered.
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a national professional organization representing more than 80,000 members throughout the United States, established the specialist certification program in 1978. The American Physical Therapy Association’s website describes specialist certification as:
"Specialization is the process by which a physical therapist builds on a broad base of professional education and practice to develop a greater depth of knowledge and skills related to a particular area of practice. Clinical specialization in physical therapy responds to a specific area of patient need and requires knowledge, skill, and experience exceeding that of the physical therapist at entry to the profession and unique to the specialized area of practice.
"The specialist certification program was established to provide formal recognition for physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in a special area of practice and to assist consumers and the health care community in identifying these physical therapists."
Fewer than five percent of all physical therapists will go on to obtain board certification. This award is recognized as a career achievement in dedication to the community and the profession.
Dr. Plummer’s work on sports certification was part of his employment with Table Mountain Physical Therapy. The culture and dedication of the clinic to providing excellence in care has nurtured this opportunity. The therapists at Table Mountain Physical Therapy are dedicated to lifelong learning and progression of their careers through continuous improvement.
James stated, “It is always great to achieve a milestone. Though, the best reward comes from providing the latest care and research to athletes the day after learning it. Helping athletes achieve goals and return to the field provides the deepest satisfaction.”
Table Mountain Physical Therapy is open Monday through Friday with early morning and evening appointments for their patients. They can be reached at 530-533-2233.
