New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Supports Call for More Transparency Regarding Doctors Cited for Negligence
New York, N.Y. (PRWEB) June 27, 2014 -- A report released by the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) states that while a majority of doctors in New York State meet state performance standards, there is not enough oversight and transparency in connection with those cited for negligence. According to the NYPIRG, a majority of the 102,554 licensed doctors in New York State have clean and negligence-free records, which do not include improper care, ordering excessive tests, misdiagnosis and other forms of medical malpractice.
But, the study found that the 300 or so doctors sanctioned for negligence between 2004 and 2013 are essentially allowed to fly under the radar because their information is not freely accessible to the public. There is currently no law which mandates that patients be informed that their doctor is practicing under sanctions or limitations. NYPIRG has urged lawmakers to require healthcare facilities to post how patients can access such information, which can be crucial to their health and well-being.
The more information consumers get, the more tools they have to make informed decisions, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "It is important that patients have access to information about their doctors' competence so they can make the right choices when it comes to their health or the health of their family members."
Wilhelm says he also supports the NYPIRG report's recommendation of including competency assessments in periodic recertification of doctors, a process overseen by the state Department of Education. "Physicians must keep up with their education, skills and latest advances in medical research and technology. This new recommended assessment can help consumers identify those doctors who are deficient in their knowledge and skill. This prevents them from getting into a situation where they can be injured or harmed."
