(PRWEB) June 25, 2014 -- Instagram launched 10 new features giving users more tools and more fine grain control for editing their photos. Social media expert Denae Olberding of EverSpark Interactive says the features are impressive, especially as a new release from an established, free app.
The photo sharing app’s new options include more photo editing tools and a “slide bar” on many tools to adjust how extreme the changes are, according to Mashable (retrieved 06.08.2014). That means that Instagram, once best known for its hip but heavily filtered “fauxlaroid” images, can now be a tool for robust photo editing.
“These are huge leaps forward,” Olberding said. “A free app on my smartphone can now do a big chunk of what professional editing software once did.”
Olberding says that this level of continued development is uncommon with free apps.
“Developers look for heavy investment up front and once they get a finished, marketable app, they largely stop spending money,” she said. “This is like an Instagram 2.0. That’s very unusual unless it’s a paid app.”
The new developments for Instagram may reflect increased competition, Olberding says.
“Photo sharing is one of the hottest fields in apps and social media,” she said. “Instagram was king for a while but Snapchat stole a lot of their market. They’re obviously fighting back.”
Instagram was also bought out by Facebook, which Olberding says gives them the deep pockets needed to continue development.
“Most apps are limited by the seed investment they get at the beginning, and after that they have to pay for any upgrades out of pocket,” she said. “But Facebook isn’t going to lose the war for photo sharing and they’re willing to put money into their front line app.”
Instagram officials have said more new features are on the way, and Olberding doesn’t doubt it.
“If they keep going like this this, they won’t just be a threat to Snapchat, they’ll be a threat to Adobe Photoshop.”
