Dr. Alexandra Ginty, Author of “Both Sides: When the Doctor Becomes the Cancer Patient,” Featured in Author Solutions’s Real Authors, Real Impact Campaign
Bloomington, Ind. (PRWEB) June 26, 2014 -- Author Solutions, LLC, a Penguin Random House company and the world leader in supported self-publishing services, is highlighting AuthorHouse author Dr. Alexandra Ginty in its Real Authors, Real Impact campaign.
Dr. Ginty, a family physician, was faced with some of the toughest decisions of her life when she was diagnosed with two cancers. She underwent a double mastectomy and lost her hair from cancer treatment. After discovering she carried a genetic BRCA mutation, Ginty elected to preemptively have her uterus and ovaries removed. But the toughest part for Ginty was when she lost what was most fulfilling to her: her career and title as a doctor.
Ginty reflected on her initial attitude toward her cancer. “I realized that I had to laugh at mistakes, put make-up on and show up for life and forgive myself to live in the present,” said Ginty. “I took a bold step to reveal an authenticity that left me vulnerable.”
About 12 percent of all women will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives, according to the National Cancer Institute. But for women like Ginty with a harmful BRCA mutation, the risk of breast cancer is approximately 80 percent, and the risk for ovarian cancer is up to 60 percent—rather than the usual 1 percent—and the cancers often affect the carrier at a younger age.
The inspiration behind Ginty’s book, “Both Sides,” came from her Positive Thinking Cards. Her cards had inspirational phrases written on them designed to transform negative thoughts into positive ones and motivate her through the hard times. Because Ginty is experienced in psychotherapy, her book discusses therapy methods, including cognitive-behavioral techniques, to change a reader’s way of thinking.
“I hope that sharing the Positive Thinking Cards and helping people notice their thinking in order to push beyond boundaries in recovery will help many to embrace life's amazing gifts,” said Ginty. “I hope readers of ‘Both Sides’ are inspired to notice their negative thinking and learn to push beyond comfort zones and notice the small things every day, no matter what you are handling.”
Ginty says that being diagnosed with breast cancer helped her to become a better doctor. She feels she can connect better with patients and help them in the ways that they need to be helped. She writes with a passion for healing from both sides: as a physician and as a patient. Now back at work, her bright attitude continues to help others through cancer and life’s challenges.
“My book has reached many people, and I have had a lot of feedback; people have told me that they are a changed person or have finally healed after reading it. Many had tears; some said they are reading it for the 3rd or 4th time—that has made it completely worth it. I had no idea it could have this impact. I hope it changes many more people and its proceeds will be donated to still help even more cancer support charities.”
