As an estimator and purchaser for the company, Stephen Nelson is responsible for a variety of tasks such as estimating costs for residential remodels, commercial tenant finishes, and light construction projects. His position also entails analyzing the scale and scope of a job in terms of sales and production for budget reviews. Nelson will organize details such as production so that the construction team can complete their jobs effectively. He will also work with subcontractors and suppliers to lower overall sales costs. This is done by negotiation and establishment of unit pricing with subcontractors.
The experience, skills, and knowledge required for the estimator and purchaser position ensures that there are no setbacks due to negligence or inexperience. Estimators and purchasers are required to have 3 to 5 years’ experience in construction estimating, strong knowledge of residential and light commercial construction, and expert blueprint reading skills. This position also requires a strong ability to work with the customer, subcontractors, suppliers, and Stone Creek Builders' construction team. Other necessary skills include strong organization, independence, thorough attention to detail, commitment to assignments, negotiation (budget and otherwise). Since this role in the company organizes many aspects of a job, these skills are necessary. Estimators and purchasers should have proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Outlook Email, and Xacimate or another estimating software.
Stephen Nelson has twenty years of experience in construction field scheduling and overseeing jobs. These include projects such as multi-family new construction in urban areas, single-family luxury housing, and finely crafted carpentry for discriminating clients. Between 1994 and 1999, Nelson served as a supervisor at AJD Construction. After this, Nelson worked as the Senior Builder for US Homes until 2001. Until 2003, Stephen Nelson served as the Master Carpenter for Eric M. Nelson Carpentry. Nelson then moved on to Toll Brothers where he worked as a construction manager until 2006. Over the next two years, Nelson was the Construction Manager for JS Hovnanian. Stephen Nelson's most recent job began in 2008 when he served as the Senior Construction Manager for Red Cedar Construction. Stephen Nelson's experience ensures that he organizes jobs appropriately so that the customer, construction teams, and other involved parties are satisfied.
Stephen Nelson has attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and New York's Columbia University. He has earned 5 and 10 hour certificates for OSHA and three NAHB certificates for Project Management, Scheduling, and Quality Control.
When he is not working, Stephen spends his time with his wife and family. Stephen is happily married and has three grown children. He enjoys taking walks, writing poetry, and gardening. Stephen also enjoys watching black and white films from the 1930s.
