Woodland Hills Top Cosmetic Dentists Offer 5 Tips for Getting More Teeth-Protecting Fluoride
Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- The average American drinks 167 bottled waters per year at a total cost of $11.8 billion, and this is major cause of concern for the prosthodontists at the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Woodland Hills and Oxnard, Calif.
That’s because bottled water does not contain the teeth-protecting mineral fluoride.
“Tap water is almost universally fluoridated,” said Dr. Saj Jivraj, founder of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute. “Adding fluoride to municipal water supplies has drastically reduced tooth decay and tooth loss since it was first added in the mid 20th century.”
Fluoride helps protect teeth in several ways, according to Dr. Mamaly Reshad, prosthodontist and partner in the Anacapa Dental Art Institute.
First, fluoride helps tooth enamel absorb other minerals, like calcium. Second, those re-absorbed minerals help make the tooth stronger than it was before. Finally, fluoride helps reduce the amount of teeth-attacking acid in the mouth.
“The risks of too much fluoride are very low,” said Dr. Reshad, “especially when compared with the danger of having too little fluoride.”
As such, Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad want to offer 5 tips on how you can get more fluoride to your teeth:
1. Drink more tap water. Be wary as some filters can remove fluoride from tap water.
2. Use fluoridated toothpaste. Tooth-decay rates have dropped in Europe despite lack of fluoridated water thanks to fluoridated toothpaste.
3. Use mouthwash with fluoride. Most people don’t need mouthwash unless they are especially prone to tooth decay.
4. Fluoride gel. Administered by a dental professional, fluoride gel is administered with a dental tray so it can penetrate teeth.
5. Fluoride varnish. Also administered by a dental professional, varnish has more fluoride than gel and is applied directly onto teeth.
Those with the following conditions are the best candidates for additional fluoride supplementation: dry mouth caused by diseases, medication and radiation treatments; a history of cavities; crowns, bridges or braces; and gum disease.
