400 BEAUTIFUL ACRES
“In 1981, I purchased 400-acre (161-hectare) Wild Horse Peak,” Jim explains. “Then in 1995, a lush, thriving vineyard, movie vignette became inspiration for the property. I visited Napa Valley to learn all that I could, returned to have soils and climate analyzed, and learned conditions were ideal for growing some outstanding grape varietals.”
“Science is a good friend,” Jim advises. “It requires respecting Mother Nature, microclimates, and soil types to produce high-quality fruit and grape flavors. Today, as purposefully as in 1996, our vineyards are sustainably grown. I remember watching virgin soil become flourishing 200-acre (80-hectare) vineyards, and I am inspired even now.” Today, Jim’s Temecula Valley vineyards also include 26-acre/10-hectare Rolling Hills, 22-acre/8-hectare South Coast, and 70-acre/28-hectare Carter Estate.

Jim’s early vintner years were as a winegrape grower, contracting to sell some of Temecula Valley’s finest fruit. “When time came to establish a winery, a talented winemaking team’s reputation for excellence was essential,” Jim explains. “Fine winemaking equipment was secured and South Coast Winery was founded in 2003. The quality commitment absolutely endures. Each year, we strive to bring all the promise of the grapes in the quality of the wine.”
Since 2003, Jim’s original winemaking team has produced South Coast Winery’s award-winning wines (65,000 cases yearly). The Temecula Valley winery creates a broad portfolio of premium still and sparkling wines as South Coast Winery, Wild Horse Peak Mountain, and Carter Estates. Under Wine Institute and Winegrape Growers’ California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance strict standards, the South Coast Winery vineyard estate is certified-sustainable.
