Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) June 29, 2014 -- Dan Smith, President of PrivatePlus Mortgage, a division of Private Bank of Buckhead, has been named to the Board of Overseers of the School of Business Administration of University of Miami. Smith is a 1989 graduate of the University’s Business School, having earned a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Marketing. He has long been involved with his alma mater in various capacities.
The Board of Overseers is the Advisory Board for the School of Business, and brings together current and former top executives in various fields who help provide guidance and external perspectives for staff, faculty and students. The Board of Overseers works with the dean, faculty and administrators to help shape the School’s academic programs and strategy.
“I am honored to serve my alma mater in this way and look forward to working with and learning from an impressive group,” Smith says.
He serves or has served the University of Miami in a number of other ways, including on the President’s Council. He also serves as an Advisory Board member for the University’s Launch Pad, which promotes entrepreneurship for students and alumni, fostering regional growth. He serves as a guest speaker for several undergraduate courses at the University, and previously served on its Hurricane Club Council Advisory Committee, which supports the Athletic Department.
“I like starting and growing things,” Smith says. “That’s been the thread throughout my career and you might say it’s my focus with the University of Miami too. If I can in some small way help provide a launch to others through the University similar to the experience that I had, I’ll be a happy guy.”
In addition to Smith, the University of Miami Board of Overseers includes Raul Alvarez, former President, COO and Director of McDonald’s Corporation; Joseph Echevarria, CEO of Deloitte LLP; Pedro Fabregas, President and CEO of Envoy; F.W. Mort Guilford, Senior Partner with Guilford & Associates; T. Kendall Hunt, Chairman and CEO, Vasco Data Security International Inc.; David H. Komansky, Chairman Emeritus, Merrill Lynch & Co.; Jorge Mas, Chairman of MasTec, Inc.; Brian Rice, Executive Vice Chairman and CFO, Royal Caribbean Cruises; Matthew E. Rubel, Former CEO and Chairman, Collective Brands, Inc., and (Member Ex-Officio) Gene Anderson, Dean of the University’s School of Business Administration.
“The best part of my continuing involvement with the University of Miami isn’t just about ‘giving back’ and continuing to associate with great people at every level,” Smith says. “Rather, I learn something with each interaction with the University, especially its students.”
Prior to PrivatePlus, he previously founded and grew multiple companies with annual origination volumes ranging from $500 million to $6 billion. In his roles as founding member and investor, Smith lead the sales training, performance management, origination, recruitment, and personnel development efforts, as well as providing strategic oversight. He is a member of The Aspen Institute’s 2012 Class of Henry Crown Fellows, which is designed to engage the next generation of leaders in the challenge of community-spirited leadership. It brings together executives—most from the business world, all entrepreneurs, all under 45—who have already achieved success. The two-year program comprises a structured series of four seminars and each Fellow undertakes an individual leadership project.
