Hyundai-Kia Corp have announced for the first time that they have conquered their competitors in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Last year’s winner, General Motors, was reduced to a third place ranking.
Hyundai, and sister company Kia, were the frontrunners in five segments of the study. The fourth and sixth place ranking from Hyundai and Kia respectively puts the Korean brand right ahead of Toyota Motor Corp, whose score was hindered with its Scion line.
New-vehicle launches tend to negatively affect scores as consumers adjust themselves to new tech developments. Kia avoided this pitfall with the Cadenza, which was released in Korea before its North American launch.
“This shows Hyundai’s commitment to evolving their automobiles in separate markets to pinpoint where improvements need to be made and provide consumers with the best possible result,” said Tulsa Hyundai Customer Loyalty Manager Emily Taylor.
The Initial Quality Study, which took place from February to May of this year, is based on responses from over 86,000 Hyundai buyers and leasers from the 2014 model years. The point scale refers to the number of issues per 100 vehicles.The IQS study is only valid if drivers have owned the vehicle for over 90 days.
Hyundai’s score was raised by 12 points for a total of 94, while its sibling company, Kia, remained the same at 106 points – 10 points better than the industry average. Other automobiles under the Hyundai Motor Company umbrella include the Hyundai Accent, the Elantra and that Genesis which all grabbed wins in their respective segments.
J.D. Power & Associates performed a study that shows 57 percent of customers who reported zero problems with their vehicles within the first 90 days of purchase bought from the same manufacturer again. This is compared to 46 percent of those who reported five or more discrepancies.
