Given the substantial amount of children living below the poverty line in South Texas and the limited access they have to dental care, we were happy to support Dentists Who Care and knew our revenues would be going to a great cause.

Whiter Image Dental is providing Texas non-profit Dentists Who Care a portion of their June revenues from teeth whitening products to help the organization pay for the overhead costs of their mobile dental care unit. The organization was created in 1996 to improve and enhance the quality of life for low-income children in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas by providing them free access to oral health care. As many as 200 area dentists volunteer their services to Dentists Who Care (DWC) to address the estimated 162,000 children in South Texas with no health insurance and no access to dental health care.
DWC won The Governor’s Award for the “Best Charity Organization in Texas” in 1999 and has managed to aid over 20,000 children who have no money, no Medicaid and no dental insurance. Oral health care is delivered via a Mobile Dental Unit which contains two complete state-of-the-art dental delivery systems and chairs, digital panoramic radiography equipment, and a computer network. Working together with schools nurses, the dentists attend South Texas schools and target fourth grade students who receive a free comprehensive oral exam and x-rays. If the children who are visited at the schools need more immediate or emergency dental care, the children are provided with complementary care by one of the participating dentists through the Charity Dental Voucher Program.
According to a report by the Surgeon General, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illness. Dentists Who Care has provided over $2.5 million to help remedy this issue in South Texas and the June revenues from Whiter Image Dental will help them to continue aiding more needy kids this year.
Whiter Image Dental Director of Marketing Amanda Poe spoke on the matter and their recent decision to contribute sales to the DWC charity. “Given the substantial amount of children living below the poverty line in South Texas and the limited access they have to dental care, we were happy to support Dentists Who Care and knew our revenues would be going to a great cause.” Although DWC has some local contributions in the form of grants and charities, the overhead from the Mobile Dental Unit is not allowed by federal and state grants and Whiter Image’s proceeds will primarily address these costs.
