Lower Valley Energy (LVE), an electric coop utility, set out to help their residential customers manage their utility bill via an energy efficiency campaign starting in December 2013. Electric coop utilities often have difficulties in reaching geographically dispersed rural customer households. LVE used Ecotone Products’ Pick, Pack & Ship service to successfully sign up and ship energy saver kits to 6,600 customer households. This corresponds to a sign up rate of 36% of LVE’s customer base in rural Wyoming and Idaho.
LVE worked closely with Ecotone Products, a distributor of energy efficiency products and services based in Fairview, Oregon to plan and implement the energy efficiency campaign utilizing energy saver kits. Ecotone Products offers a straightforward comprehensive suite of services referred to as “Pick, Pack & Ship” to manage the entire process in collaboration with LVE:
- Pick: LVE and Ecotone jointly explored the options for different products that could be included in LVE’s energy saver kits. LVE chose an energy saver kit that included 2x 1.5 GPM showerheads, 6x standard compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), 6x CFL globes, and 2x CFL reflectors.
- Pack: The next decision that needed to be made was to choose a package design to ship the product to customer homes. LVE picked a white box with a large LVE logo imprint.
- Ship: LVE chose to have most of the packages delivered via USPS presorted bulk shipments directly to the customers’ homes. Some packages were handed out to customers at LVE community offices. These methods of delivery kept the overall project costs low.
With these major decisions in place, LVE worked closely with Ecotone Products to create a custom fulfillment website that allowed LVE customers to go online and request an energy saver kit. LVE promoted the energy saver kits via targeted email blasts to a limited number of customers at a time. This marketing method allowed for LVE and Ecotone Products to manage subscription rates and ensure continuously high levels of customer service throughout the project. When customers visited the website to request a kit, all customer information was recorded and eligibility instantly verified online.
