This Unique Condition is Explored in a New Segment

Narcolepsy is not exactly a household name, but this medical condition is hardly rare. Perhaps most importantly, it can be pretty serious. This brain disorder involves the improper functioning of the sleep-wake cycle and causes a person to experience extreme daytime sleepiness and to unexpectedly fall asleep. Other symptoms can be present during these bouts of sleepiness, such as a condition called cataplexy. This is a loss of voluntary muscle control that makes a person temporarily unable to move even while they are awake.

As expected, narcolepsy can be an extremely dangerous condition if a person falls asleep while they are driving. It is estimated that about one person in 3,000 is affected by narcolepsy with cataplexy. It is likely, however, that there are many more cases of this underdiagnosed and misunderstood condition than are being reported. "Leading Edge with Jimmy Johnson" wants to educate Americans about narcolepsy and dispel some of the myths that surround it in a new segment.

Public Television stations distribute this series across the United States. It is not, however, distributed through PBS.
