He is one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the UK and spent many years working in some of the busiest hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Dr Drabu always had a passion for oral surgery and received his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about a recent article on the dentistry.co.uk website. The full article, which was published on 27 June 2014, can be read here.

Dr Tariq Drabu said “I believe that it is exceptionally important for adolescent orthodontic patients to cooperate with dental professionals regarding their treatment. This is a recipe for the best results. Orthodontic patients often struggle with keeping their teeth clean, which is why dental professionals and the patient should work together to achieve success.”

Dr Tariq Drabu in Manchester went on to say, “One of the suggestions is a rewards programme, scoring patients on their oral hygiene at each dental visit. Adolescents are more likely to follow the rules if there is something in it for them. By understanding younger patients and enabling them to have a say in their own treatment is also a way to ensure positive results.”

Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “In addition to this, electric toothbrushes could be an effective tool to promote and improve oral hygiene in orthodontic patients. While there isn’t enough sufficient evidence to prove this, it could be a tool used by dental professionals to encourage younger patients to carry out effective oral hygiene on a daily basis. I also believe that educating patients on the importance of brushing and the correct brushing methods is essential, along with why they should floss and how to floss while undergoing treatment.”
