“Century: 100 Years of Type in Design” Exhibition Extended Through July in New York City
Woburn, MA (PRWEB) July 07, 2014 -- "Century: 100 Years of Type in Design," the exhibition now underway at the AIGA National Design Center in New York City, has been extended through July 31, 2014 as part of AIGA’s celebration of its centennial year throughout 2014. Created by AIGA Medalist and Pentagram partner, Abbott Miller, and produced and curated by Monotype, Century spotlights the integral role of type in design over the past 100 years. The exhibition opened in May and is free and open to the public.
“While there is nothing like delving into the use of type to intrigue a designer's inner fetishes, Century has demonstrated how broad the interest in typography has become,” said Richard Grefé, AIGA executive director. “The exhibition appeals to so many by illustrating what makes different publications feel so different, while lifting the curtain on how type is designed. Audiences have left with a sense of wonder, having discovered what they didn't know they didn't know about type."
The Century exhibition features a host of rare and unique works from premier design organizations in the U.S. and England, including Monotype, AIGA, Pentagram, Mohawk Paper, The Type Directors Club, Condé Nast, Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, The Type Archive, The Herb Lubalin Study Center at Cooper Union, Alan Kitching, and The Museum of Printing.
“We’re surrounded by design from dawn till dusk, but it’s not often that you get the chance to see the history of type in design and the work that shapes our environment,” said James Fooks-Bale, Monotype’s creative director and co-curator of Century. “Only a handful of people can say they've been within touching distance of the original paper, drawings, and designs of such rare works and unique artifacts. We are fortunate to have participation and support from some of the brightest designers, museum curators, disruptive thinkers, and creative directors from museums, publishing houses, and design companies around the world.”
Designed to communicate the diversity of typographic form, Century provides the opportunity to see works by some of the most distinguished members in AIGA’s history, including Oswald Cooper, Herb Lubalin, William Addison Dwiggins, Bruce Rogers, Alexander Liberman, Milton Glaser, and Seymour Chwast. Hundreds of typographic periods from the Monotype library dot the walls and floor of the exhibition space. Periods are also featured in an animation set to the pulsing sound of a heartbeat, which hints at the notion of type as the heart of graphic design.
