The championship has steadily grown in popularity and in 2013 over 2,400 entries were submitted throughout the Unites States and Sectional Qualifying was conducted across the country. To compete in the championship players had an index not exceeding 7.4 qualified at one of 53 sites across the US. A handful of players earned an exemption from qualifying as a result of their prior performance in the championship or their performance in other USGA events. Past champions earn a ten year exemption from qualifying. Kemp Richardson, a member of the El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel is a two-time winner of the championship and was exempt from 2002 until 2013 for winning in 2001 and 2003. An accomplishment that only a few have achieved. Another unique accomplishment which Kemp can brag about is that he and his father John, are the only father who have won the championship.
