Former Player Returns as Chairman

Former Cotton Bowl player Daniel P. Novakov, now a shareholder in the Dallas office of international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, has been named Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association (CBAA), which sponsors the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic football game. Novakov will lead the CBAA and oversee the AT&T Cotton Bowl’s first season as a member of the College Football Playoff. The 79th annual Cotton Bowl Classic will be played on January 1, 2015 and the Cotton Bowl will host its first National Semifinal Game in 2016 under Novakov’s leadership.

"Having played in the Cotton Bowl twice and then having spent eight years on the Board of Directors, I'm fully aware of the importance of the AT&T Cotton Bowl to our community. Our goal is to provide the memory of a lifetime for both student-athletes and fans alike by making each Cotton Bowl game the finest college football experience in America. It certainly was for me," said Novakov who is the fourth former player to return to the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic as its Chairman.

Novakov, an active member of several Dallas community organizations, has been involved with the Classic’s Board of Directors since 2006, and has served as Vice-Chairman of CBAA’s Executive Committee for the past four years. A Cincinnati, Ohio native, Novakov is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he was a three-year football letterman. His affiliation with the AT&T Cotton Bowl dates back to the 1970s: Novakov was the starting left tackle in the 1970 Cotton Bowl Classic, and he moved to center and helped lead Notre Dame to victory in the 1971 Classic.

“We are proud of Dan’s continued service to organizations that promote commerce and growth in Dallas,” said Stephen C. Carlin, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Dallas office. “Dan is a proven leader who works as hard for the community as he does for his clients. We congratulate him on taking the helm of this well-respected organization. ”

He has a broad based practice in corporate tax matters; investments; securities offerings; U.S. activities of foreign taxpayers; foreign activities of U.S. taxpayers; executive compensation and employee equity arrangements; partnerships and S corporations, charitable organizations; and federal and state tax controversy work.
