To achieve this ultimate goal requires not only active participation in our safety processes by all employees; it requires constant commitment and leadership from everyone.

Custom Air Products & Services, Inc. (CAPS), a leading commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) company based in Houston, Texas (US), is proud to announce its third year of no recordable injuries and superior safety ratings.

For the past three years, CAPS has had a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of zero. TRIR is the measure of the rate of recordable workplace injuries, normalized per one hundred workers (or 200,000 man-hours) per year. Recordable cases involve occupational death and any non-fatal occupational illnesses including loss of consciousness, restriction of work or motion, transfer to another job, or any medical treatment other than first aid. CAPS has had no recordable injuries since June of 2011, making this the third year of a near perfect TRIR.

Another component used to measure safety is Experience Modified Rate (EMR). This is a number used by insurance companies to gauge both past cost of injuries and future probabilities of risk. The EMR of 1 is considered to be the industry average. In the past three years, CAPS has had EMR scores of .82 in 2012, .88 in 2013, and .70 in 2014 with all three scores being below the industry average.

CAPS Safety Director, Robert Covington says: “The key to our excellent safety record is our employees. Our goal of Zero starts from the top down and is reflected in the performance of our employees. To achieve this ultimate goal requires not only active participation in our safety processes by all employees; it requires constant commitment and leadership from everyone. It is critical that all employees feel strong sense of responsibility, empowerment, and accountability when it comes to ensuring that everyone works safely. Only by working together, with every employee doing their part, can we make safety incidents a thing of the past. Without question, safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
