Manchester United and Real Madrid to Battle in 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup at Michigan Stadium. Two of the most popular football teams in the world will take the pitch against each other at Michigan Stadium at Ann Arbor on Saturday, August 2nd. The two teams that will be competing that day are Manchester United from the English Premier League and Real Madrid from La Liga. Michigan Stadium, or The Big House, as the students at the University of Michigan call it, is the third largest stadium in the entire world and is the 31st largest sports complex. The venue has an official seating capacity of more than 109,000 fans, but has held more than 115,000 fans in the past. The facility might not be filled to capacity when these talented teams take part in the group stage of the tournament, but it will be filled with fans looking to see some of the most talented and most skilled players.
Manchester United, or The Red Devils, as they’re called by their loyal followers, were originally founded in 1878 and are one of the most successful teams to call England home. They are based in Greater Manchester, or Old Trafford to be exact. In their long and storied history, they have won 20 League titles, a record for English teams, as well as 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and 20 FA Community Shields, which is a record. They have also won three European Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, and one Intercontinental Cup.
Real Madrid won the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup a year ago after defeating Chelsea. The tournament was previously known as the World Football Challenge in its three years of operation, Real Madrid also claimed two more titles. This year, they will be led into the tournament by Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazilian defender Marcelo, Portuguese defender Pepe and Spanish defender Sergio Ramos. These players all helped lead their respective nations to the World Cup this year and many of them instantly became fan favorites to those that were new to the sport.
Manchester United is the second most valuable sports team from any league or organization in 2013 with a value of more than $3.165 billion. The team was purchased by the late-Malcolm Glazer who was also the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League. The team has a loaded roster of players that include many that competed at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil including Wayne Rooney and Jonny Evans from England, Rafael from Brazil and Robin van Persie from the Netherlands.
