Alliott Group Legal Member Hahn Loeser Announces New Intellectual Property Practice Co-Chairs
Cleveland, Ohio (PRWEB UK) 15 July 2014 -- Hahn Loeser & Parks LLP is pleased to announce that R. Eric Gaum and Arland (“Art”) T. Stein are the new co-chairs of the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice. Mr. Gaum (Akron, OH) and Mr. Stein (Columbus, OH) will be supported by Hahn Loeser’s IP Leadership Council, comprised of partners Amanda H. Wilcox (Cleveland, OH), James D. Schweikert (Akron, OH), Jeanne L. Seewald (Naples, FL) and Shannon V. McCue (Cleveland, OH). Hahn Loeser represents businesses of all sizes, in Ohio and throughout the world, in the procurement and enforcement of IP rights. The firm also provides patent, trademark, copyright, licensing, technology and due diligence counseling to a large base of national clients.
“Mr. Gaum and Mr. Stein are both exceptional attorneys with a strong focus on best practices and innovative thinking,” said Lawrence E. Oscar, Hahn Loeser’s CEO & Managing Partner. “These qualities, in combination with their natural leadership abilities, will enable them to further grow Hahn Loeser’s thriving IP practice and continue to expand the quality, breadth and depth of IP services available to our clients. In addition, our IP Leadership Council, with its tremendous experience, will serve to ensure continued excellent client service.”
While many mid-sized, Midwestern firms have attempted to build an IP practice piece-meal, Hahn Loeser has had a complete IP team – including IP attorneys, patent agents, trademark specialists, and support staff – for more than 10 years. The Group currently stands at more than 25 dedicated IP professionals, making it one of the largest in Ohio. Its team members have a diverse range of technical experience, with most having had prior professional employment in a technical field or industry before joining the firm, and continue to actively participate in a variety of legal and technical associations outside of their day-to-day practice.
“Our broad experience in IP law, combined with our ability to handle the largest litigation and arbitration matters, enables us to assist our clients in actively protecting and enforcing their IP rights as well as defending them from allegations of violating the IP rights of others,” said Stanley R. Gorom III, Chair of Hahn Loeser’s Business Practice Area.
Mr. Gaum, a trial lawyer as well as a patent lawyer, has been lead counsel in jury and bench trials and has successfully arbitrated and/or mediated settlements involving all types of IP disputes. His background as an electrical and software engineer enables him to litigate complex patent and copyright disputes before various federal appellate courts involving an array of technologies, including cell phones, location-based services, and dental x-ray imaging software, among others. Among his successes, he served as lead counsel for Snap-on Business Solutions, Inc. (a branch of Snap-on Incorporated, an S&P 500 Company) in a jury trial related to unlawful online database scraping.
Mr. Gaum is also active in the firm’s construction law group where he counsels clients on copyrights in technical drawings and architectural works. He has litigated copyright disputes over architectural works and drawings, and patent infringement claims related to building technology. He is involved in all aspects of construction law, from non-disclosure agreements to enforcement and/or the defense of copyright, trade dress, trade secret, and patent infringement claims.
Mr. Gaum has been recognized for his professional accomplishments in such publications as Ohio Super Lawyers, and is AV® Preeminent Rated™ by Martindale-Hubbell, its highest available rating for legal ability and professional ethics. For nearly 15 years, Mr. Gaum has served as a domain name dispute administrative panelist for the World Intellectual Property Organization. He formerly served as an extern for The Honorable Judge Peter C. Economus, United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio.
As counsel to Nucor Corporation, the largest producer of steel in the United States, Mr. Stein was the principal lawyer involved in the drafting and negotiation of agreements between leading steel makers focused on next-generation steel making and the world’s first thin-slab steel caster. The joint venture controls a patent portfolio of more than 1,500 patent and pending patent applications worldwide, and the company has a very active worldwide licensing program. Mr. Stein also regularly deals with technology transfer and exploitation issues involving technology created internally within these companies or various academic institutions.
Mr. Stein has also tried a number of high-profile patent infringement cases - such as the intermittent wiper case against Chrysler - and has been retained as appellate counsel in a number of appeals before the Federal Circuit. Additionally, he has extensive experience in prosecuting patents and trademarks before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and in other countries, counseling in the development of litigable patent portfolios, rendering opinions on infringement and validity of patents and trademarks, and negotiating patent and trademark licenses in the United States and other countries.
His extensive knowledge of the patenting process is critical to drafting opinions, enforcing client rights, and providing sound business counsel in IP management and monetization. His professional practice encompasses all aspects before the USPTO and the Federal Courts, including preparing and prosecuting utility and provisional patent applications, trademark applications, appeals, post-grant proceedings, oppositions, and other complex areas. Mr. Stein has prepared and filed more than 1,000 patent applications, and effectively prosecuted those applications before the USPTO in technology fields for his clients.
Mr. Stein has been recognized in Who’s Who in American Law, and The Best Lawyers in America, and is AV® Preeminent Rated™ by Martindale-Hubbell.
