Number of Testosterone Therapy Lawsuits More than Doubles in Two-Week Period, Baron and Budd Reports
DALLAS (PRWEB) July 18, 2014 -- The number of lawsuits filed involving plaintiffs claiming they suffered adverse health affects after taking drugs associated with testosterone therapy more than doubled from June 6-16, 2014, reports the national law firm of Baron and Budd. On June 6 there were 45 such lawsuits pending in the U.S. District Court of Illinois, but by June 16 there were nearly 100 lawsuits pending. A Transfer Order was issued on June 6 by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL), to consolidate lawsuits to facilitate more efficient progression of the cases. According to the Order, thousands more testosterone lawsuits could potentially be filed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on January 31, 2014 that it was undergoing a review of the medications in the wake of study results that showed a potential link between the drugs and the cardiovascular issues. These studies indicated that men taking testosterone therapy medications faced a higher chance of developing health problems than men who did not take the drugs. On June 20, 2014, the FDA announced it would require manufacturers of testosterone therapy medications to add a warning to their labeling regarding the potential formation of blood clots. The higher risk, according to the agency, is due to a condition known as polycythemia, which is an increase in red blood cell count. Testosterone drugs have been linked to the condition.
