Willingness to Start Over is Rewarded by Key Position within Charlotte Company

'He was willing to start - in his own words – at the bottom, and work his way back up to the top,' said Doggett.

Doggett Concrete, Inc. ( announced that Omar Castro has joined the company as Chief Residential Estimator. As Doggett Concrete celebrates its 50-year anniversary, they welcome Omar to the team.

With over 10 years experience as a Supervisor and Engineer in the Dominican Republic, Castro climbed the ladder within one company, working on highway design, roads, grading and anything involved with highway construction.
“I was eager to learn, so I was provided ample opportunities,” Castro said. “This gave me experience in many aspects of civil engineering.”

Omar made his way to Charlotte after he married a lady from Charlotte. In order to find work in the US, he applied and qualified for a grant program called North Carolina Back to Work. The grant was awarded to Central Piedmont Community College's Construction Technologies Division at the Harper campus. It provided short-term job training to qualified applicants in high demand industries. Upon acceptance, Omar chose the Concrete Finishing program. “I understood that this would be a great way to meetcontractors and decision makers within the construction industry,” Castro said.

And it paid off. Doug Doggett, President of Doggett Construction said, “When I met Omar, I was immediately impressed with his demeanor, professionalism and experience, but his unassuming approach to finding work here really struck me. He was willing to start over, despite the progress he made over 10 years in the Dominican Republic.” Doug Doggett participated on the Industry Partners' Advisory Committee with Central Piedmont Community College's Construction Technologies Division. Doug along with other industry professionals helped ensure that students were being provided current and relevant techniques used in the field so that they would be well prepared for future employment opportunities. It was here that Omar made his introduction and shared his resume.

“While Castro was clearly qualified for a high-level Supervisory – or even On-Site Management position, he was willing to start - in his own words – at the bottom, and work his way back up to the top,” said Doggett.

“The best assets of any company are the people. Anyone can buy equipment and bid work, but it is the people who do the work and act with integrity.” Doggett said. “When you have people on your team who share your strong core values; aren’t afraid of hard work, and have an innate dedication to excellence, you have the recipe to overcome obstacles and grow – not just as a company, but as a family - and individually. I met Omar and knew I wanted him on my team.”

Castro’s role at Doggett Concrete Construction will be to provide estimates for residential grading, walls, footings, slabs and driveways.

“The software that Doggett utilizes helps predict costs associated with various elevations, measurements, and materials,” Castro said. “I’m able to provide a scope that’s closer than any other software I’ve worked with in the past.”
