According to the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), the pending home sales index jumped by over 6% in May. This increase far surpassed even the most optimistic forecast in a recent Bloomberg survey of economists.

May’s pending home sales increase is the greatest since many first-time buyers took advantage of a tax credit before it expired – four years ago. Tunney agrees with NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun that first-time buyers are vital to the continued recovery of the real estate market. “As renting continues to become less affordable, there seems to be a growth in first-time buyers,” commented Tunney. When houses for sale in Piedmont include 87 Sea View Avenue, offered at $5,250,000, the neighborhood is not likely to see many first-time home buyers; however, real estate sales tend to include a bit of a domino effect – the sale of one house generally means the purchase of another.
