“Our typical turnaround time is 5-10 minutes for a customer to receive their Schedule 1, the document they need to have to prove they have paid their 2290 tax.”

Never wait until the last minute to file your taxes. The IRS permits third-party providers to allow users to file their next year’s return before July 1, but they do not accept the filing until July 1. Each year there is a rush of users filing before and on July 1, creating a backlog with the IRS that takes a few days to clear.

“Our typical turnaround time is 5-10 minutes for a customer to receive their Schedule 1, the document they need to have to prove they have paid their 2290 tax,” said Ed Pratt, Vice President of Business Development for TechAtlantis. “On and just after July 1, that can expand up to a few hours based on the traffic jam of returns being filed to the IRS at once. After a couple of days, the IRS clears the backlog and we return to our normal 5-10 minute process.”

The Schedule 1 provides proof of payment that truck drivers use to obtain tags, renewals, and other certifications showing that they operate their vehicle in a compliant manner. Every driver of a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more must obtain the Schedule 1 shortly after putting their truck on the road. Each year, they must pay their excise tax and obtain their 2290 again, usually by the end of August.

“The regulations state that a vehicle must have the excise tax paid by the end of the month after the vehicle hits the road,” said Pratt. “For a new purchase, that means the owner may need to obtain the 2290 at any month during the year. For a truck that was on the road last year and will continue to be on the road this year, that means the tax must be paid by the end of August since the tax year begins July 1. Because of that, our busiest period of the year is during the months of July and August.”
