Summer of Sumatra: Bird Rock Coffee Roasters' Ulos Batak Variety Scores 96 Points By Coffee Review
La Jolla, Calif. (PRWEB) July 16, 2014 -- Industry coffee report, Coffee Review, recently ranked Bird Rock Coffee Roasters’ Sumatra Ulos Batak coffee at 96 points. Coffee Review has not awarded a score that high to a Sumatran coffee for more than 6 years, and this is the highest score Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has ever been awarded to date.
Coffee Review conducts blind cuppings and ranks coffees on a 100-point scale. The coffees are judged based on five different criteria, and Bird Rock’s Sumatra Ulos Batak scored a 10 for both aroma and flavor, nine for body and aftertaste, and eight for acidity.
Two other Bird Rock varieties, the Panama Elida Estate Natural Catuai and the Ethiopia Washed Yirga Cheffe also received outstanding scores of 95 and 94, respectfully, and were both sourced through direct trade with the individual farmers.
“Our goal at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has always been to provide the highest quality coffee in the world to our San Diego customers, and beyond,” said Chuck Patton, owner of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. “The high scores given by Coffee Review validate the quality and love that go in to sourcing and roasting the coffee we serve, and we’re honored by the recognition.”
According to Coffee Review, the Sumatra Ulos Batak was given the following assessment: “Extraordinarily intense and complexly aromatic coffee. Pungent fruit (grapefruit, black currant); moist pipe tobacco and sweet, freshly turned clay; molasses and chocolate fudge. Round, quietly vibrant acidity; full, syrupy mouthfeel. Richly sweet, powerfully flavor-saturated finish."
The Sumatra Ulos Batak, Panama Elida Estate Natural Catuai and the Ethiopia Washed Yirga Cheffe are all currently available at Bird Rock’s pour-over bar, and a 12-ounce bag can be purchased in-store, or online. For more information, and to purchase, visit http://www.birdrockcoffee.com.
