"IKEA is all about a lifestyle," says Semihandmade founder John McDonald. "In the past year we’ve expanded from just kitchens to include doors for the entire house. We needed a space to reflect that.” Exposed brick frames the kitchen, bathroom and living areas in the thousand-square-foot showroom located just minutes from IKEA Burbank, while high ceilings further the "loft" feel.
Also new to the company are design services, complimented by a coffee bar and work-stations. “We think of ourselves as the ultimate IKEA app,” says McDonald, “So adding design was a no-brainer.” There’s even a plan in place to offer accessories like slip-covers, furniture legs and decals from other IKEA-related companies. Biggest hit by far, though? “Definitely the kids’ section!” laughs McDonald.
He adds, “Since 2011, we’ve shipped to over forty states and Canada purely on word of mouth. This year we’ll double the 300 IKEA projects we completed in 2013. The best way to keep growing is by putting our doors in front of people to touch and feel for themselves.”
Future plans include Semihandmade spaces in Costa Mesa, CA and Brooklyn, NY. For now, the Burbank showroom is a great first step. “IKEA has a total of 50 stores in North America, five of them in Southern California alone,” says McDonald. “Not only is the Burbank location one of the largest sellers-per-square-foot, they'll be replacing that store with the largest IKEA in the US in 2016. When it opens we'll be ready.”
