Experiencias Xcaret Group Plants More Than 400 Thousand Plants in 18 Months
Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. (PRWEB) July 17, 2014 -- More than 200 thousand plants have contributed to restoring Xoximilco Cancun from its previous deterioration to being the newest tourist attraction in the destination.
In its 24 years of existence, Experiencias Xcaret Group has promoted the care and preservation of the Mexican Caribbean ecosystems, under the principle that the respectful use of resources is compatible with the tourist industry and with regional development. In the past 18 months alone, more than 400 thousand native plants have been reforested in different spaces in Cancun and Riviera Maya.
A large percentage of the plants were used to reforest traffic islands and public spaces in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Ciudad Chemuyil, Tulum and even Valladolid, Yucatan from January 2013 to June 2014. The Mexico reforestation project aims to produce, rescue and reforest native plants from the southeast of Mexico as well spreading butterfly host plants in Xcaret Riviera Maya.
The reforested native plants come from the nurseries at Xcaret Park, Xel-Há Park, the Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México not-for-profit organization and even private suppliers, said Wendy Santaolaya, Sustainable Competitiveness Manager at Experiencias Xcaret.
Reforestation efforts have been carried out consistently for over 14 years, said Santaolaya, as she pointed out that today one can see full grown ceibas in Federal Highway traffic islands near Playa del Carmen, which are part of the first reforestation programs by Experiencias Xcaret Group in public spaces in Cancun and Riviera Maya.
A case in point of this effort is the new Xoximilco Cancun where in less than a year more than 200 thousand native plants were reforested at the piece of land where this new attraction now stand. Prior to the reforestation project, the location was once used as a mine to extract materials for construction leaving it in bad ecological conditions at the beginning of 2013. Wood bearing trees like cedar and mahogany were planted in an area of 6.6 hectares.
Santaolaya pointed out that all the information related to the care and preservation of ecosystems has been included in the Experiencias Xcaret Group Sustainability Report which is online for anyone who wishes to consult it. “Our commitment to transparency and accountability is an important element to create a more aware and sensitive society that cares for the planet and human beings”, assured Santaolaya.
