A completely new concept of providing affordable CT scans for early detection of lung cancer has just been listed on crowdfunding site, Indiegogo. Only $295 will be charged for a CT scan to provide the information doctors require for the early detection of lung cancer, which 1 in 13 men, and 1 in 16 women get during their life time. 75% of those who get lung cancer die which will be reduced to around 15% by early detection.
Founders, Phil and Cameron Ellis, “We cannot understand why early detection CT scans, especially checking for lung cancer, are not done routinely as hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved. This includes my father-in-law and grandfather, who has been given only months to live having been diagnosed too late to cure”. “Currently 224,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year in the US and 159,000 die (75%), and of the 232,000 diagnosed with breast cancer only 40,000 die (17%). Much of this difference has to do with early detection and it is time that something is done about this horrendous statistic”, the Ellises added.
Currently CT scans for regular early diagnosis of lung cancer is not covered by medical insurance, and the current costs hospitals and medical centers charge for CT scans can vary from $1500 to $12,000. “It simply isn’t affordable to average families, but could save their lives. 85% of all lung cancers are related to smokers or those who have smoked before, which is around 100 million Americans. 99.5% of all lung cancers are in people over 40. If we could scan everyone, over 100,000 lives could be saved every year” according to Ellis.
