Arlington, VA Modified Accessibility Remodel
It was gratifying to help her [the homeowner] and through the process bring together a design that fit not only her personal taste but also her lifestyle needs.

Moss Building and Design, an award-winning, family-owned remodeling company in Fairfax County, strives to create a home design that is tailored to each and every client based on aesthetic, budget, and family dynamic. Moss is a unique remodeling company because through their in-home consultations, they listen first in order to ensure that they meet the needs of their clients because a home should first and foremost fit a client and their home lifestyle.

In this Arlington, VA remodel, above, Moss, who has completed many designs with ranges of accessibility, was able to create this space for a homeowner, prior to her move-in date. The condo apartment features stunning views of Washington, D.C. and the unique aspect of the job was the marriage of the traditional style of the homeowner in a contemporary condo building with accessibility needs in mind.

The overall layout of the condo focused on accessibility for the homeowner, the space for the owner’s power chair dimensions, and for guests at the condo. Accessibility in the kitchen came through full access cabinet drawers, the addition of 2 dishwasher drawers, and the relocation of the microwave into a space that was more accessible. Quartz countertop was installed for the visual appeal, but also for the low maintenance of the material.

The kitchen design included a fully custom Moss branded cabinetry line from Hampshire Company. The cabinets were walnut with a darker stain and were matched in the master bathroom remodel to create a cohesive design throughout the entire condo.

What made the experience so dynamic was the group effort used to create the perfect design for the homeowner. The homeowner was seeking a place that could be a home for an extended period of time but she also wanted a space that was aesthetically pleasing while not looking like an assisted living space.

Through the initial design from the homeowner’s sister, designer Michelle Kangas to interior design consulting from J & J Designs, LLC., the technology and installation from iHome Integrations, to Moss Building & Design, the collaboration created a design perfect for the homeowner.

Moss Building & Design's Principal Designer, Erin Hoopes, found the experience fulfilling due to the amount of collaboration. “It was gratifying to help her [the homeowner] and through the process bring together a design that fit not only her personal taste but also her lifestyle needs.”

Moss has often put together designs for modified accessibility and collaborated with homeowners’ designers or physical therapists to bring together a remodel that meets the needs of the client.
