Xarelto Lawsuits Filed Contend Wrongful Death and Internal Hemorrhaging Due to Blood Thinner
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) July 20, 2014 -- The attorneys at Wright & Schulte LLC have learned through Reuters that almost 10 Xarelto lawsuits have been filed in the United States against Germany-based Bayer AG over its blood-thinning medication. Court records indicate that one of the Xarelto lawsuits was filed on behalf of a Kentucky woman who alleges developing uncontrollable internal bleeding as a result of taking the blood thinner. The Xarelto lawsuit was filed February 24 in the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia County. (Stuntebeck v. Janssen Research & Development LLC et al, Case Number 140201754) More recently, a Florida woman filed a Xarelto wrongful death complaint in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida that alleges her husband died due to uncontrollable bleeding after taking Xarelto. Xarelto, generically known as rivaroxaban, is a prescription blood thinner manufactured by Bayer and marketed in the United States by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xarelto for treatment in reducing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients who had knee or hip replacement surgery and for reducing stroke and blood clot risks in patients with atrial fibrillation.

According to court documents, a Florida woman filed a Xarelto wrongful death complaint on June 23, 2014, in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida that alleges her husband was prescribed Xarelto in January 2012 to treat atrial fibrillation. According to the Xarelto lawsuit, the spouse was hospitalized on June 23, 2012, after suffering a subdural hemorrhage. He underwent a medical procedure in an attempt to stop the bleeding, but died five days later. The Florida woman’s Xarelto lawsuit contends that the defendants, Janssen Research & Development and Bayer, concealed their knowledge to consumers, the general public and the medical community that Xarelto allegedly causes life-threatening irreversible bleeds. The Xarelto lawsuit further contends the defendants did not warn or advise how to intervene and stabilize a patient should a bleed occur. (Case 9:14cv80831)
Court records further show that a Kentucky woman’s Xarelto complaint against Janssen Research & Development and Bayer Corp. alleges she was prescribed the blood thinner in July 2012 to treat atrial fibrillation. In February 2013, she suffered severe internal and gastrointestinal bleeding that required hospitalization in order for doctors to stop the bleeding. The Xarelto complaint further alleges that the defendants were negligent in introducing the drug. (Stuntebeck v. Janssen Research & Development LLC et al, Case Number 140201754) The complaint was filed a month after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s January 21st ruling that pharmaceutical companies in Pennsylvania can be held negligent for marketing or designing drugs that they know or should have known are to dangerous to use.
